Participatory Defense brings the community together to assist defendants and their families with their court cases. We meet with public defenders, analyze police reports and other documents related to the case, and prepare social biography packets containing photos, character letters, and other records of accomplishment, employment, and community engagement. These methods empower the defendants to participate in their own defense and enable the criminal justice system to see defendants as worthy human beings; a revolutionary concept.Meetings are held each Wednesday evening, and you are invited to attend and learn more.

The rapid response team is our working group to support a growing movement for Sanctuary in the Streets. We coordinate our efforts with Faith in Action and other Bay Area groups to recruit citizen allies to respond to the presence of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in the neighborhoods by witnessing, taking video, and sending information to legal teams. Oftentimes detentions can be thrown out of court in suppression hearings because ICE rarely follows proper procedure. Our goal is to build a movement where it is commonplace for people to witness law enforcement activities and protect each other from all forms of bullying, violence, and abuse, whatever the source. Future stages of the movement might include street theatre, prayer vigils, singing, and coordination with news media.
